Frequently Asked Questions
-
While both promote relaxation, a standard foot massage focuses primarily on muscle tension in the feet and calves. Reflexology is a targeted, whole-body therapy. Specific reflex points on the soles, tops, and sides of the feet map to corresponding organs, glands, and systems throughout the body. Applying pressure to these points works via the nervous system to stimulate natural balance and healing across your entire system.
-
Comfortable clothing that allows access to the feet and lower calf.
-
Reflexology is a gentle therapy; there should not be any pain. Where tenderness or tight tissue is felt, this means congestion. Tenderness and increased sensitivity in the feet can be temporary side effects following the first reflexology session. A tingling or pins and needles sensation in your feet may occur during treatment. This usually means your body is responding. I will always communicate throughout the session to ensure the pressure feels comfortable and effective for you.
-
This is one of the most common worries! Reflexology uses firm, grounded, and deliberate pressure - not light or feather-like touches. Because the pressure is firm and precise, it calms the nervous system rather than triggering the tickle reflex. Most clients find themselves deeply relaxed within the first few minutes.
-
There is no need to remove any clothing, just your shoes and socks.
-
Most people feel deeply grounded, relaxed, and calm. Occasionally, as your body releases stored tension and toxins, you might experience mild 'cleansing' responses over the next 24 - 48 hours, such as feeling thirsty, slightly tired, or needing to pass urine more frequently. Drinking plenty of water after your treatment helps support this natural flush.
-
Even a single session provides deep relaxation and stress relief. However, if you are working through long-term issues like chronic tension, digestive trouble, or ongoing stress, a series of weekly or fortnightly sessions (typically 4–6) works best to create lasting balance. Afterward, many clients choose monthly maintenance sessions.
-
Reflexology does not take the place of mainstream medicine; it is a complementary health treatment. A reflexologist will never advise change in their clients' medication and will when necessary refer their client onto or back to their medical doctor. Reflexologists cannot diagnose through the feet, prescribe anything, even session amounts and duration. This is a holistic therapy that will help relieve tension in the body.
-
Reflexology is safe for almost everyone, but there are a few exceptions (called contraindications). We will avoid treatment or adapt our approach if you currently have:
An active deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or blood clot.
Contagious skin conditions or severe fungal infections on the feet.
Acute foot injuries or fractures.
Note on Pregnancy: Reflexology is wonderfully supportive during pregnancy, though we adjust specific techniques depending on your trimester. Please check with your medical doctor first.
